Throughout history wine has been the most popular beverage ever used by mankind. From the Greeks of the years of early B.C.s to the aristocrats of Europe during medieval times to the modern urbanized man, this drink has stood the test of time in style. In this article I intend to focus your attention and to educate you about a specific category of wine; dry wines.

If you are a layman who is not too familiar with wines and their verifications, you would probably have little to no idea on what these dry wines are; well in a nutshell, dry wines are wines that have no sweetness or very little amount of sweetness in them. And sometimes these dry wines could also contain high levels of acidity compared to other wines.

The reason why dry wines don?t have sweetness like the other wines is that the sugar in the wine is eaten up and transformed to alcohol during the long fermentation process. This affects the taste and the texture you feel, and sometimes even the aroma the wine gives as well.

The sweetness of a wine is commonly measured by the amount of residual sugar contained in a liter of wine, and the limit of dry wines are from 12 grams per liter or less; the wine gets drier as the density of sugar goes down in the wine. This being the case, it is virtually impossible to find a wine that has zero grams of sugar per liter in it, in other word a wine that is purely free of sugar. This is due to the fact that most of the fruits used to create wines have types of sugar that are unlike glucose and fructose, and are very hard to turn into alcohol, such as pentose. The wines that have a residual sugar density between 12 to 4 grams per liter are considered medium dry, and the ones below 4 are called dry.

You can also find dry wines in the recipes of certain delicacies. The main reason for the use of dry wines in cooking is to give the food the strong flavors of a wine without adding the sweetness that one would get by using a medium sweet or a sweet wine.

As with all wines, you need to make sure the wine you are buying is of good quality. The manufactured year and the manufacturer are some pointers that would help you do that; be sure to buy a good quality one if you really want to be able to experience the heavenly delights of wines of this form.
